May Day, mayday…socks on the loose.
So yesterday was May Day, a bright and overly sunny day, where thousands not only in America but all over the world, took to the streets to protest various goverments/legislation. The events of the Day without Immigrants was all over, in blogs, photoblogs, the news. It was weird walking out yesterday and seeing the streets fairly empty and the stores closed. My boyfriend lives in North Hollywood, further north from Studio City, where a good majority of the population is Latino. So in retrospect, we shouldn’t have been that surprised when we walked by this strip mall.

The whole issue of immigration is such a touchy subject. As an immigrant to the United States, and as someone who entered legally (our family waited ten years for the whole process), I can see both sides of the issue and it’s still all really very confusing. For me, the issue lies in what are we going to do with the 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States? It seems unimaginable that deportation will be possible, let alone all the famillies that will be torn apart. What to do? I do know a few people who came to this country through *other means and it is something we don’t really discuss. But the one thing I know for sure is, people came to the US for a better life. We can’t blame anyone for wanting that. /end rant.
In other knitting news: I have been held away from blogging because I have been busy knitting socks. Yeah, it’s a little bit addictive. I haven’t even finished my first pair of socks when last night, I cast on with newly bought yarn from my LYS for a pair of Jaywalkers. Oooh…this yarn is really lovely and fits in for my Project Spectrum color for this month. It’s a really light, springtime green. The Jaywalkers are going well so far and the pattern is really well written and very simple to remember. I remember when I first thought about knitting socks how daunting that seemed. It isn’t bad but it is addictive, like crack, so one knitter online told me. Heh. I love it already!

So in terms of my blog, I’ve updated my About page..and will try to post more consistently.
Oooh happy news! The yarn pictured was spun by a local knitter and spinner. The reason I’m so excited is that she is local and in her twenties! You can’t imagine what a barren place it is to knit in West Covina, California! She mentioned she just learned to spin and offered to let me try her wheel one day. Oooh. She has an Ashford Kiwi. I don’t know anything about spinning but I’m excited nevertheless.
Gosh, now that I’m typing it’s all tumbling out…
Last great news, I decided to learn how to use a drop spindle and bought one through eBay (Annie May)last Friday and it came in the mail today! Whoohoo. I will figure that out tomorrow and do more reading on it today. It wasn’t too much of an investment, so why not? I’m done for now, aren’t I? It all started out with me wanting to make “something”. Hah.
Okay, I need to get back to those socks…and watch Idol. (I hate to admit it but I have been following it this season, and now, I have to see who wins.)
