Colours to dye for…
I’ve been so excited about dyeing that I’ve forgotten to blog. =) Kool-aid dyeing is so fun, I wish I had more yarn to dye with. Anyhow, he’s what I’ve done so far. I ordered yarn from Wool2dye4 and originally ordered their Supersock (merino) but it was out of stock and Sheila (from Wool2dye4) graciously offered a substitute, a Kona Fingering Superwash sockyarn. It was $11 for 8oz…not a bad deal, eh? The Kona fingering turned out better than expected. It fluffed up more after washing, and has alot of twist to the yarn.
For the yarn on the left…what I call Berries n’ Cream, I dyed it with grape, black cherry and pink lemonade and used the warping board to make my own self-striping yarn. I think next time I dye the separate sections, I’ll need to use a larger container because the colour didn’t come out evenly. But overall, I liked the effect. There seemed to be two different shades of the grape…a darker one, and a lighter lavender colour.
The green yarn on the right was dyed with ice blue raspberry kool-aid and lemon lime. I used foam brushes to hand paint this yarn. I found the green (lemon lime) overpowered the ice blue colour, and got lost in certain places. For a first time, I didn’t mind too much. The green is definitely more vibrant in person than in the photos.
What I learned? Kool-aid dyeing is fun fun fun, if you’re not to picky about the results. I think it’s sufficient enough, however if you want more control over the process, it’s hard to manage it. Of course, this is my first time, so I’ll have to figure out which process work best and continue experimenting. And of course, if you want to work with a bigger palette of colours, I might have to veer off and use different dyes. Eventually…
Anyway, I have the step by step for the striped sock yarn dyeing on my flickr. More photos, yay.
