Window Shopping for Sock Yarn.

* When did you start making socks? Did you teach yourself or were you taught by a friend or relative? or in a class?

I taught (around March/April 2006) myself how to make socks using an online tutorial. This was a fantastic beginner tutorial that took you step-by-step through the whole process and using different types of yarns. Once I learned the construction, I’ve been working on patterns from Charlotte Schurch’s Sensational Knitted Socks.

* What was your first pair? How have they “held up” over time?

I knit a pair taken from the sock knitting tutorial (above) using Knit Picks’ Parade. I haven’t even worn it since I had knit it over the spring/summer time and it’s been too hot to wear socks. I don’t know if I’d ever wear them with shoes…perhaps just be house socks.

* What yarns have you particularly enjoyed?

I love buying sock yarn! There’s so many PRETTY colourways out there Sigh. I love Lorna’s Laces so far…it’s just soooo soft. I haven’t had much experience knitting socks but have been window shopping for YarnPirate, Sundara, SweetGeorgia, Cherry Tree Hill, Koigu and Yarntini yarns. Talk about temptation to spend all my moneys on that, esp when it takes me ages to knit socks. I already have tons! I hear alot about Trekking and Regia but those other sock yarns just draw me in like moth to a light bulb. It’s those colourways I tell ya…

* Do you like to crochet your socks? or knit them on DPNs, 2 circulars, or using the Magic Loop method?

I knit using DPNs and I do like that method. I want to learn the Magic Loop method…but later in the future.

* Which kind of heel do you prefer? (flap? or short-row?)

I really suck at the short-row heel. I’ve only done it once though and there were all these funky holes. I don’t mind the flap though…the construction of socks just fascinates me. I do prefer the look of the short-row heel though but I’m just no good at it right now.

* How many pairs have you made?

Not many. I’ve only made three pairs (regular stockinette socks, jaywalkers, and baby cable ribbed socks) so far but I have two on the needles and more planned! Too bad I knit sooooo sloooowly. :)

P.S. I am seriously lusting after sock yarn right now! I mean…I really should finish of those socks before I go and buy more (especially since an order just came in from eBay–more Lorna’s)…sheesh…it’s so hard to resist!

No kidding! It is very hard to resist when I see all of the beautiful socks that all of the Socktoberists are knitting now. I wanna pull out that credit card and buy away! I do have some nice yarns in the stash though… and I love them too… we always want what we don’t have!
