FO: The Funky Ribbed

I got SOCKS! (for pbs)

I was never really into wearing socks. Not as a fashion statement anyway until later on in my life. I’ve always lived in climates where one could run around in flip flops, bare toes and scuffed heels. Totally unfeminine. Then I discovered pedicures, so yet another reason to run around in showing off my bare toes. Me, wear socks? Well, if it’s gonna cost me $10 for a 20 pack…who cares? It gets cold about two months out of the year ;-) so that’s not a bad investment. Last year, I had a thing for toe socks. They sure do keep my feet toasty warm and it would give me an excuse to let my feet breath and wiggle them impishly at whoever was around me for a giggle. (I am so dorky sometimes!)

And then I decided to learn to knit socks. I didn’t know what the fascination about sock knitting. All heard were the words, ‘crack’ and ‘addictive’ whenever sock knitting was mentioned. I figured I needed to at least try it once.

All the hype about sock knitting is true. (Hello Socktoberfest!) And what’s worse was NOBODY told me about sock yarn and how much of a threat it would be to my checking account (and my mental state). Heheheh.
I finished my fourth sock in time for the close of Socktoberfest, and it’s my best yet. I admit since I was knitting it for someone else, I certainly took more care with all the stitches. Now, the intended recipient has witnessed my descent interest/growth in knitting and has sat patiently while I waxed on about knitting and yarn. I don’t think he ever really understood it until he wore his first pair of handknit socks by yours truly. Today, he understood why I’ve raved on about yarn…and he’s feeling the luxury compared to his other socks and the significance of someone ‘making’ him something. He called me on the way home from work to tell me all about it. Hahaha!
He gets it!!! It’s a great feeling to have that acknowledged about my knitting, especially as it’s a very personal interest for me.

So yes, these are for Dan. I almost wanted to keep them too but I would have had to fight with him over it…so in my last hurrah with them…had to have some fun.

Project: Slipped Stitch Socks for Dan
Pattern: Charlotte Schurch, Sensational Knitted Socks
Yarn: 2 hanks of Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sport in Pine, lots left over
Needles: #2 DPNs bamboo, #1 DPN’s for the heel

So yeah, I think he wants more handknit socks. Good thing, I’m on a sock high and have quite a handsome stash of sock yarn to choose from. ;-)

that is a great green color! i love your shoes, too! so cute! i’ve been eyeing that pattern, but i haven’t found the right yarn for it just yet. yours came out really nicely. non-knitters truly don’t understand sock knitting until a handknit pair adorns their feet, yes? the only problem is when the demand for socks exceeds the capacity of the knitter to knit them. stash is not a problem. no, not ever. the finishing of socks is a problem - especially if you’re prone to cast on more socks and other projects before the first one is even finished. hahaha! sock knitting…my favorite. :)
